During the BlogPaws conference last spring, I had the chance to learn about Remember Me Thursday. Created by the Helen Woodward Animal Center, this event shines a light on pet adoption and to remember all the pets who didn’t make it out of the shelters.
There is a super easy way that you can help homeless pets by entering the Remember the Rescue contest.
My dog, Theo, is a rescue. It is clear he was well fed and well loved before he became ours. I can only imagine how heartbreaking it was to take him to the shelter, but I am so thankful he is ours now. He waited close to a month in the shelter for us to find him. No one else was interested in him. I shudder to think what might have happened to him if he wasn’t in a no-kill shelter.
If for some reason, you find yourself unable to take care of your pet, please contact a no-kill shelter or rescue group to take him or her.
The Helen Woodward Animal Center has some great adoptable dogs as well as puppies If you aren’t looking to add another family member or foster, please help shine a light on pets who are waiting for a home!
This is Balboa! He is a goofy and happy-go-lucky guy!
Balboa is a Lab mix approximately two and a half years old.
Cooper is a Keeper! This Shepherd blend has everything you could want in a best friend. Cooper is a 5-year old, active guy who also has a laid-back side. He’s just as comfortable on the trail as he is napping away the afternoon. He’s a smart guy and already knows several commands including sit, shake, and stay. What a guy!
If Hurricane Harvey has a silver lining, it might be that some pets were evacuated and brought to shelters where they have a better chance to be adopted. In some areas, even cute little puppies aren’t adopted out in time.
This cutie, Troy, is a Chihuahua mix and is about three months old. He is currently available for adoption.
How will you help shine a light on pet adoption on September 28th? Please enter the #RemembertheRescue challenge!

I’m only hearing and reading now about Remember Me Thursday and think it’s a wonderful idea to help spread the word of the many pets out there waiting for their forever homes.
Debbie says
Balboa and Cooper are so cute!! Cooper sounds like he’d fit right in in our house! Hiking and camping with lots of naps and sun worshipping in between 🙂 If only we weren’t full to the brim. Hope they both find great homes soon!

Thanks for shining a light on Remember Me Thursday. Too many pets die in shelters because they didn’t get adopted in time. Volunteering for a shelter that isn’t no kill really drives home that point, there is a lot of heartbreak as well as the joy of seeing many pets get adopted. It’s easy to feel helpless at times. Sometimes pets end up at shelters that aren’t no kill because a no kill shelter can’t take them due to space limitations or they don’t get accepted due to issues that may make it too hard to rehome them. I hope all these beauties find loving homes, they are all so sweet!! I always wish I could take them all, I know you do too.
Beth says
I can only imagine how difficult it is for staff and volunteers working at a shelter that doesn’t have the luxury of being a no-kill facility. Thank you for making life better for homeless pets!

I hadn’t heard of RememberMeThursday until a couple days ago. It’s great to shed light on such an important issue. The animals in shelters are the forgotten ones. I hope all the pets that survived the hurricane are able to be reunited with their owners or find their new forever homes. So sad. The pictures are very sweet though. 🙂
Sadie says
Thank you for reminding people to research shelter options if they must surrender a pet. Remember me Thursday is a day to reflect on happy memories of rescued pets that enhanced our lives, recognizing the ones who did not make it, and advocating, in their memory, for those currently in need.

I will help shed light on animal rescue for Helen Woodward Cancer Center. I’m a proud guardian of two rescue dogs, both of which were saved from kill shelters.

Remember me Thursday I personally think is the most important Pet Holiday on the calendar with a woof from Layla

We are year round rescue advocates and just had a fundraiser to raise money for Cocker rescue. It was a success. I love that this post is online and folks can see what a difference they can make by bringing an animal in need into their lives. Many warm hugs to you.

Such beautiful fur babies! I hope they find homes soon where they will be well cared for and loved forever!

Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if shelters weren’t needed? I get so sad to think of all of these beautiful animals living their lives in cages without the comfort of a human who loves them.
Stephanie Seger says
I would take any one of these dogs! Thank you for shining light on such an important issue. I wish there were no kill shelters at all. Unfortunately, I feel like there is too much finger pointing and not enough problem solving to prevent the mass numbers of rescues we have today. But I believe you are right, every person has the ability to help in some way. We just need to do it! Sharing! Thank you!
