Did you know that avocados are good for dogs? A few years ago I came across an infographic listing common foods that are toxic for dogs; I was surprised to see avocado on the list. Taking my better safe than sorry attitude, I made sure my dogs didn’t eat avocados. However, recently I learned that avocado fruit is NOT toxic to dogs. Avocado pit, leaves, bark, and skin contain persin, a compound that is known to be toxic to horses and birds, but not dogs. Avocado pits are a choking and blockage hazard to dogs, but the part humans eat? That is also healthy for dogs!
AvoDerm natural dog food received the second highest rating from Dog Food Advisor. We know that avocados are a superfood for humans, and it turns out they are also really good for dogs.
From AvoDerm: “Avocados are a natural superfood, full of nutrients, crude fiber, and contain vitamins A, C, and E, as well as B6. They are rich in folate, potassium, niacin, essential fatty acids crucial to good skin, and coat health, and they also help to promote overall health.
The avocado meal and oil used in the AvoDerm Natural pet products comes from the meat of the fruit and does not contain the leaves, bark, skin or pit of the fruit. The oil is extracted from ripened fruit in which the meat pulp has been separated from the skin and the pit.”
About a month ago I was asked to let my dogs try AvoDerm. First I read this report from the ASPCA: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/avocado. Next, I read this one from Veterinary Pet Insurance: http://www.petinsurance.com/healthzone/pet-articles/pet-health-toxins/Avocados-and-Pets.aspx. Both concluded that avocado fruit is safe for dogs. So, I decided to let my dogs try it.
I transitioned Theo and Sophie to it during a week with no issues. Shortly after that, my husband and kids went camping for almost a week.
When they came back, my son commented on how Theo’s fur seemed so much softer than it normally it is. I’m always surprised when my teens notice something like that.
I have to give AvoDerm the credit for that! Healthy skin and coat are signs of good health. We love the texture of Theo’s softer fur. Due to Nelly’s allergies, I didn’t start her on AvoDerm when I started the other two. Last week, I started her giving her a little bit of AvoDerm with her regular food. Her allergies didn’t flare up. If you have an itchy dog, try AvoDerm for healthy skin!

I have also heard that avocados were toxic to dogs. Thanks for looking into this and for the great review. It sounds like a food to consider.

I too thought until recently that avocados were toxic for dogs, but after some research learned that it is the pit that we must not let our dogs digest.

This is amazing! I’m still so confused by what dogs can and cannot eat as everyone is saying differently! I remember how a few years ago, I was 10000% sure that dogs can’t eat potatoes! Up until this blog post, I was convinced they can’t eat avocados, either! The things you learn. 😀 Thank you for sharing!
