Hughie and Enzo were photographed by one of my favorite photographers, Meredith Perdue.
Carolyn Mix and Darcy Doniger run 2 Note Perfumery in Portland, Maine. While “just-looking” on Petfinder, they noticed Enzo. He had been pulled from a high kill facility.
He was more than just adorable, Carolyn and Darcy felt deeply connected with him and started the adoption process.
After many emails and approval from C.A.R.E, Enzo was transported from Tennessee to Maine to his forever home with Carolyn and Darcy.
Carolyn and Darcy stayed in touch with the people from C.A.R.E and learned about Hughie on Facebook. Hughie had suffered terrible abuse, requiring around-the-clock nursing care. Again, it was not simply outraged against an animal terribly wronged or the adorable face of Hughie, it was more. It felt like someone had hurt THEIR dog.

A short time later, Hughie and a rescue worker were on a plane from Tennessee to Maine. Although somewhat shy around strangers, Hughie has recovered and is one very happy little dog!
His capacity to trust people shows the forgiving nature of dogs as well as the dedication of the people who rescued him.
I think that Enzo and Hughie are going to live happily ever after now that they’ve found their forever home!
As for Carolyn and Darcy, their words sum it up better than I could ever hope to: “Enzo and Hughie are the meaning of life to us. They remind us that the past is what it is, you cannot change it. But each day is ours to create, all we have is now. They make me laugh out loud, my heart swells from so much love I don’t know what to do with it… except grit my teeth & squeeze!”

With all due respect and not wanintg to speak for Darcie, who I’m sure will be comfortable giving her own feedback I just want to say that hugs to a dog can mean a lot of things.I consider that my dogs feel hugged’ when temperatures (like now) hover around ten below zero and they have just finished enjoying a 45-minute chew of their raw beef knucklebones on a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet (spread on my living room floor for their comfort and convenience) in my 60-degree house.My dogs feel hugged’ during 95% humidity and dangerous temperatures of our brutal Midwestern summers when they can train with me in my air-conditioned house which give them something to anticipate and think about, since we can’t go for long walks in that kind of heat.They’ve been hugged’ when we have a rip-roaring thunderstorm and they know they have places already reserved for them, snugged up against me in a bed already warm with familiar and safe scents of me and them.They feel hugged when they know their regular routines (breakfast at ##AM, break time at Noon, supper at ##PM) are all in place and all’s right with their world.And so I wish such hugs to your dogs Kathy B.
