When I hear the words “adventuresome dogs”, I automatically think of Retrievers. But the truth is, there are all kinds of little dogs having big adventures of their own. Nelly, is my Maltese, and she what she lacks in size, she makes up for in spirit. Nelly enjoys riding in canoes, going camping and hiking in the Adirondacks. She is always up for a walk, car ride or a playdate. She likes other dogs and plays with them when she gets the chance. Although she can’t keep up with her best friend, Franny, she still tries. She loves looking out the window and watching the world go by. Nelly, like most dogs, seems to enjoy everything life has to offer. For all her spunk, though, there is one thing that gets Nelly down. She suffers terribly from allergies. When her allergies flare up, she spends almost all of her time chewing and scratching herself. Nelly is relentless in her search for relief, but what happens is she breaks the skin, which becomes infected and the cycle just gets worse. In 2014, she had to be on a large round of steroids to control her itching. We’ve narrowed down her allergies to two: pollen and a grain allergy.
I am excited that Nelly is going to be trying Pinnacle ® Holistic Pet Nutrition. Pinnacle has always been a holistic pet food using limited ingredients, and as of May 2015, all of its formulas for dogs are grain free.
Pinnacle Holistic Pet Nutrition Offers:
- Quality ingredients like Quinoa, Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Sea kelp, Cottage Cheese
- Natural, healthy recipes that use high-quality proteins
- Antioxidants to support healthy immune system
- Fiber to encourage healthy digestion and small stool
- Promotes general joint health and overall muscle tone
I especially like the fact that the food is made in a plant in California.

We’re getting better quality food lately, too.
I grew up with the idea that dog food is all the same, and maybe at the time, it was, but now there is such a huge difference between some brands.
We’re definitely going to have to keep an eye out for this! My (Liv) big sister is a mastiff with terrible allergies, including to the feline residents of our home, and while food can’t do anything about THAT, Mom tries to feed her the highest quality food, with minimal ingredients, that she can get her hands on. Thanks for sharing!!
I hope that your big sister will enjoy Pinnacle. I never thought about that dogs could be allergic to cats, how sad!
It would be wonderful if Pinnacle resolves sweet Nelly’s allergies.
This sounds like a good food. I’m glad there are so many premium foods available these days.
Me too, I am sure that is one of the reasons why pet life expectancy has increased over time.
I love holistic pet food! It is nice when ingredients are natural and designed to help the whole body to function optimally. Nelly is such a cutie! I’m glad that she has been able to go on so many adventures with you!
I hope it helps her allergies. Mr. N says he is small but mighty and has all the adventures.
I think Nelly would love Mr. N. He certainly leads a great and interesting life now!
Nellie is so cute – Kilo the Pug says hi. I get terrible allergies to pollen etc but Kilo the Pug is OK so far. My kids can’t eat Gluten. I have cut back grain in his kibble so he can have it in the odd treat or when we cave and share toast (just teeny morsels but he loves them).
I’m glad that Kilo doesn’t have allergies! Nelly was around 6 when we first noticed her allergies. I’m glad there are more food choices available that are gluten free for humans nowadays.
Wow, this sounds like a great food! My dog Phoebe has some digestive issues; very hard stool and I suspect she has allergies too. She actually looks a lot like Nelly! Let us know how Nelly does on Pinnacle food, I’d like to give it a try as well. My dogs also love pumpkin & sweet potato!
I will be posting again after Nelly has been on the food for a while. Every time I see Phoebe’s photos, I think she looks like Nelly (and not just because they are small white dogs.)
great write up, and fabulous score on da coupon!
Thanks MattieDog!
I can’t get enough of the gorgeous photos! We’re huge fans of grain free. Diet is important.
I plan on giving all my dogs grain free food eventually, it just seems like it will be a healthier option for them.
We considered Pinnacle during one of our food transition phases but had to pass because it wasn’t grain-free. I’m very happy to see that they have added that option to their line up. It is sold in a few of our local pet stores that only carry quality food. I have heard good things about the brand.
I’ll let you know how Nelly likes it.
Poor Nelly. Allergies are the worst.
Hope Pinnacle helps her feel good for all her adventures.
Thanks! She even gives up people watching out the window when she has a bad flare up.
Love the picture of Nelly snooping around in the drawers. How cute is that?!?!
Thanks!
