Like so many people I am grateful to our veterans for their military service. Veterans Day is a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many. A few months ago I learned about a fantastic organization that helps military veterans: Patriot Rovers. A nonprofit organization, Patriot Rovers trains dogs to become Psychiatric Service Dogs. Frank of Simon Photographic generously shared some of his touching series of the veterans and dogs brought together by this organization.
From Patriot Rovers: “Our mission is a tri-fold mission of healing. We rescue dogs and assist Veterans who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or any other diagnosed disabling traumatic brain injury due to combat. We honor heroes by naming the dogs, at the request of Gold Star families, after their loved one who has made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.”
Every dog in the program undergoes extensive socializing and training to become a Psychiatric Service dog. After a dog is fully trained, the dog and veteran participate in a 40-hour training course. Additionally, they go home with supplies for the dog. This series by Frank Simon shows the amazing and unique bonds between veterans and their dogs and illustrates how successful Patriot Rovers is. You can see more of this series on Frank’s blog, with additional portraits here.
If you know a veteran who might need a service dog, contact Patriot Rovers. You can also follow Patriot Rovers on Facebook.
About Simon Photographic: Frank currently resides in Tucson, Arizona. He is available for commercial photography, headshots and a limited number of weddings. Frank loves to travel.
