While National Dog Day is officially declared to be in August, a lot of us celebrate our dogs every day. Loyal, loving and devoted, our canine companions are family. In addition to loving them, we do our best to keep our dogs healthy and happy.
Darla belongs to my sister, Alice G Patterson. Darla is one of Alice’s three dogs and is the baby of her family. Adorable is a term that be used to described Darla’s personality as well as her physical attributes.
Darla enjoys a comfortable life and receives a lot of attention from Alice as well as everyone she meets.
In addition to “spoiling” her dogs with comfy beds, toys and lots of interaction, Alice prioritizes their basic needs. They have regular meal times, fresh water, a big yard, exercise, and regular visits to the vet, including heartworm preventative treatment.
Sadly just ONE bite from an infected mosquito can cause heartworm disease. It is important that dogs are tested annually for heartworms.
Heartworm is potentially fatal, yet it is preventable. Banfield Pet Hospital® offers preventative care for parasites, including ProHeart6®, an injectable preventative that lasts for six months. Even in our cold New York winters, my vet recommends preventative heartworm treatment year-round.
It is my personal experience that it is easy to forget to administer it a monthly heartworm preventative on the correct date. I read that the compliance rate for oral treatments is only 50%. Simplify your life and ban heartworms with ProHeart6®.
Special Offer: You can receive one free exam and consultation at Banfield Pet Hospital® by filling out the form here. (Please note that the offer is valid for new clients only, expires 1/15/16, and additional restrictions may apply.)
Banfield Pet Hospital offers a customizable Optimum Wellness Plan® that provides recommended preventive pet care—which can help you keep your pet healthy and happy.
How do you do keep your dogs happy and healthy?

Here in the south, we have mosquitos all year. A heartworm preventative is crucial. No dog should ever have to suffer from heartworms. It is the one thing that we can control.

Yes! I adopted a shelter dog with heartworms. It saddens and angers me that it could have been prevented by his previous owner!

Heartworm prevention is a very important part of our pets healthcare and a simple thing to administer. Darla is gorgeous 🙂

I think a lot of people don’t understand how common it is (especially in some areas) or how simple it is to prevent. I hope this encourages people to use a heartworm preventative.

Beautiful dog and photos (as usual)! 🙂 I didn’t know there was a heartworm preventative injectable. That’s interesting; certainly worth looking into if one forgets the monthly pill regularly! I have my dogs on Heartguard chewables. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking your dog is immune to this disease, but I see way too many cases of dogs who are getting it, especially dogs that end up in shelters. 🙁

Great photos! My dogs take their heart worm in pill form every month. I didn’t know about the injectables. Great info and thanks for sharing!

Heartworm preventative is really critical and you’re right its easy to mess up the monthly schedule. I love the idea of an injectable heartworm med that lasts 6 months. I’m going to look into that!

Love this sweet sweet Darla face! Also, count me among those who didn’t realize you could now get an injectable heartworm preventative. I’m going to look into that for Nina, because I have definitely messed up the pills more than once!
Beth says
It is easy to mess up the monthly dose.

I give this to my dog when we play his doggie games at night and he really enjoys it

I didn’t realize that they were transmitted by mosquitoes – scary! I’m definitely asking about this at our yearly checkup.

Living in the south means mosquitos all year long. We never miss our heartworm preventative.
