I’ve always heard March comes in like a lion, but March is coming in like a pair of Portuguese Water Dogs this year. You’ll understand once you see this awesome photo from Beth Photography. Molly and Atlas must have so much fun during this snowy photoshoot.
From Maegan: “After lots of research, we decided a Portuguese Water dog would be a great fit for our family. We were so fortunate to meet an amazing, responsible breeder who spent lots of time getting to know us, to match us with the best puppy for our family.
Our breeder became our biggest resource and a close friend. Last year when Molly’s sister had a beautiful litter of 14 puppies, we decided to keep the ‘pick of the litter’ and try our hand at conformation!
Atlas instantly fit into our family. At only a year old, he already has his Canadian Championship, Canadian Good Neighbour Certificate, and a Rally Obedience title.
Molly and Atlas play together constantly. When we’re gone to work, Molly lies right beside Atlas’ crate all day.”
Although I’m a big proponent of dog adoption, if you are considering buying a puppy, please research breeders carefully as this family did.
An ethical breeder will, among other things:
- welcome you to visit the mom and puppies
- ask you lots of questions and be happy to answer your questions.
- will insist that you sign a contract stating that if you can’t keep the puppy, you will return it to the breeder
- never sell puppies to a pet store
- test the parents for genetic diseases

Oh my goodness – look at those beautiful dogs! Thank you, also, for adding information about how to find a reputable breeder. If you’re going to buy, (which I did for my own personal reasons) it’s SO INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT to only support good breeders. Definitely worth the mention.

How precious! Yes, finding an ethical breeder is a must. If we ever opted for one, I’d do my research for sure. For now though, we always go to the shelter!

These are good and very important tips to keep in mind when looking for a breeder. I can appreciate a breeder that shows a lot of interest in the families the future pups would be living with.

Oh! They are so cute! Yeah, I love the way treated dogs as a family and I’ve learned more about from your blog. For me, dogs decrease stress levels.

These dogs are gorgeous!! I wish I had a backyard so I could have a bigger dog!
MELANIE EDJOURIAN says
Oh wow, they are so cute!!! My son really wants a dog but we don’t have space for one. I think it’s great the breeders get buyers to sign a contract to return puppies to them if they can no longer care for them. Not all breeders do that.
Beth says
Yes, that’s a big clue to help figure out if you’re dealing with a good breeder or someone who is just in it for the money.

I am so inlove with the photos! I have three dogs and one of it is a black bear type chow. I am actually having a hard time taking a picture of her. Now, I am much more motivated upon seeing how these furr pets look in the camera.

I love snow-covered dog faces. During the winter, Cookie is incapable of getting out of the house without coming back with a snow mask. She says the snow attacks her.

This pair sure look happy – they love the snow. I noticed that their rear ends are shaved. Is that the common style for these dogs?

Sadie says
GORGEOUS dogs, and equally stunning photos. I’m so glad that Maegan points out the importance of finding a reputable breeder. My husband and I are fans of PWD’s and have searched for them on rescue sites over the years. I am impressed by the work done by breeders, and rescue organizations who advocate for this breed as there never seem to be many listed as needing to be rehomed.
It seems Molly and Atlas enjoy the snow as much as the water!
