I think any time is a great time to adopt a dog, but October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. A lot of people have the misconception that if you want a purebred, the only option is to buy a puppy. However, that’s not true! Can you guess which of these dogs were once homeless? A few were even on the list to be euthanized. (All of these dogs are now treasured members of their families.)
If you want to do a little research before making your guess, just click on the dogs’ names to read their stories.
Which of these dogs were rescues? All of them!
The next time you hear someone say “I would adopt except I really want a ____ (puppy, specific breed, therapy dog, service dog. etc.)” Please show them this post. All kinds of dogs end up homeless, but they can make excellent pets, companions, therapy and service dogs!
Have you ever been surprised to learn that a dog was once in a shelter? We would love to hear about it!
If you are looking for that perfect dog, start at your local shelter. You might want to try Barkbuddy, Petfinder, and Adopt-A-Pet. If you know of a great rescue group that isn’t listed on our rescue page, please email the information to submissions(@)dailydogtag(dot)com.

Love this, I’ve always wanted to do a similar post. There are so many different kinds of dogs that can be adopted, be it pups, pure breeds or happy mutts. Thanks for highlighting that in such a beautiful way! And thanks for including Major! 🙂

This is fantastic! These photos just made my day, especially Smiley and Ace – so sweet. There really is a huge variety of dogs in shelters…purebreds AND mutts, senior dogs AND puppies, and everything in between! Great post 🙂
