The first time I laid eyes on Theo, I thought he was both super cute and hilarious looking. We signed the adoption agreement and stopped at the local pet store to buy a few supplies. It occurred to me that people might judge me because my dog was overweight. However, since I adopted him that way, I didn’t really care.
It was clear from his behavior that his previous family fed him table scraps after dinner, but we never did. I bought a weight control dog food and encouraged my kids to exercise him. Theo started losing weight and I thought we were well on our way to a healthier dog. By Christmas he was noticeably thinner, but by January, it became obvious that his hunger was a problem. Theo figured out how to work the foot pedal on the garbage can and started helping himself to anything he could reach. If someone dropped food, Theo was aggressive about claiming it. He tried to steal treats and food from the other dogs. In short, he was miserable and so was I. So I gave up his diet to help get back the pleasant dog I adopted. About the same time, Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution was looking for a few bloggers to help their pets lose weight. I jumped at the chance for Theo to try this food. I love my dog and I want him to be healthy, but he isn’t happy when he thinks he is starving.
Because it is a prescription food, we had to first take Theo to the vet to get her approval. She asked me what I was hoping for Theo. My answer is pretty simple: I want him to stop feeling hungry all the time, and I want him to be a healthy weight. She thought Hill’s® Prescription Diet® Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution might be the perfect food for Theo and we are transitioning him over to the new food.

I like those odds, Theo likes the food! (Not surprising though, since he considers cat poo a delicious midnight snack.)
Approximately 53 % of dogs and 55 % of cats are overweight or obese. It was easy for me to see that Theo was overweight, since he was heavy when I met him. However, I didn’t realize that Sophie was also overweight until the vet told me. I guess when you love someone, you don’t always look at them with a critical eye. Fortunately, Sophie was able to lose weight without trouble.
Everyone knows that being fit is part of being healthy and I’m hoping this food will help Theo be fit as well as happy!
I’ll update you on his progress over the next few months.

My dog Holli Berri needs to go on a diet. She is 8 1/2 years old. She is a terrier mix, when I adopted her she was around 26 lbs; today she is much heavier. Like Theo she is a rescue dog and I did not realize she was raiding her sister’s and brother’s food when I was not looking.

Aw, Theo is such a cutie! 🙂 We were pretty much in the same boat as you guys, trying different ways to get my cat to lose weight, but we finally gave up. Thankfully we were also chosen for this trial so we are hoping we can get her to get to a healthy weight soon. 🙂 Good luck to you guys!
