I have long admired Kirstie Tweed of Orange Girl and been a faithful reader of her gorgeous blog. So naturally when I started thinking about launching the Daily Dog Tag, I had high hopes she would send me photos of Leroy and Mabel. These two cuties traveled a long way to find their forever home with Kirstie and her husband Kevin, but it was worth it to find the perfect family.
Leroy is one of the cutest puppies I’ve ever seen. He was in an animal shelter in Mississippi but was transported all the way to Canmore, Alberta, Canada as part of a rescue effort.
Seriously, I don’t think he could be any cuter!
Lovely Mabel joined the family in 2011 and Kirstie says Mabel is Leroy’s therapy dog, giving him the courage and reassurance he needed. He was smitten the first time he laid eyes on her, its easy to see why.
Don’t you just love the heart on Mabel’s paw?
From Kirstie: “Both dogs were rescued by our vets who have been working with the New Orleans shelter since hurricane Katrina. That original shelter was destroyed in the hurricane and a new shelter has been put up in Mississippi. Our vets continue to work with the shelter providing spay and neuters, medical attention and rehabilitation. They have been driving up vans of dogs in need of homes from Mississippi to Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Leroy and Mabel were both rescues from 2 separate rescue trips. They were adopted over a year apart but have acted like long lost siblings since the day they met.”
Since I’ve started the Daily Dog Tag, I’ve become aware of how many amazing humans are involved with dog rescue. It seems that Leroy and Mabel’s vet is one whose actions speak louder than words. She personally drives rescue dogs from Mississippi to Canmore, AB to help them find families. A quick check on mapquest shows it is around 2,500 miles one way (estimated 39 hours of driving). That’s incredible dedication! Please give her vet’s office a big like on Facebook.
You can see more of Leroy and Mabel as well as some incredible weddings on Kirstie’s blog. Be warned though, once you see Kirstie’s blog you are going to be planning a wedding or at least a vacation in Banff!

These certainly are a couple of adorable pups. I agree with Alice that the story of Kirstie’s vet is quite remarkable. I love all the portraits but that last shot is extra sweet.

Thank you dearly for featuring our sweet pups, what an honour! Thank you for the kind comments. We are incredibly grateful for the work that our vets do to rescue dogs and thankful for our dog family due to their efforts.

Thanks everyone…it’s the driving vet here! The rescue is the humane society of Louisiana who is dedicated to saving all these wonderfully placeable dogs from the south. Humanely.org is the website as money is ALWAYS in short supply. We cannot do a transport this year as Johnna Harris the shelter manager and my driving partner is undergoing chemo and radiation. Thanks for your kind comments and keep her and the animals in your thoughts
