Whenever it snows, I think about how happy the Huskies are. According to their personal photographer, Alison Mae, Willow the Husky and Nova the Husky mix are enjoying every flake.
From Alison: “These are my sweet dogs, Willow and Nova! They love playing in the snow! Willow (the bigger of the two) is 7.5 and is full Siberian Husky. Nova is 1.5, and we believe she is a mix of Siberian Husky and Border Collie. They love snow and having them around has made me appreciate these Indiana winters even more! I love these photos because you can see the snow sitting on their fur.
We have had Willow for almost eight years. For a long time, she was our only dog, so she was pretty spoiled. (And she was my first dog ever so I learned a lot about dogs because of her!) We rescued Nova in the fall of 2017, and it has been really fun learning how to be a two dog family. We don’t have children, so they get a lot of attention! Our favorite part about having them both around and seeing how different they are.
Willow is incredibly smart and strong-willed. When it snows, she will go outside and refuse to come in because she loves it so much. You can tell that she is truly in her element. Nova was actually scared of the snow at first but is slowly learning to love it too. Though she really does prefer to be inside cuddled up with us. Willow and Nova’s favorite hobby is pulling my husband on his bike – sort of like a sled – and they will play tug of war with each other for hours!
Nova is a rescue. Unfortunately, it was a case where a spouse left an abusive situation – both for her and Nova – and wanted to find the puppy a safe place. She would no longer be able to take care of Nova and feared the abusive spouse would further abuse Nova if she left her behind. Instead of sending her to the shelter, we were able to find out about Nova through a friend of a friend.
We are so thankful to have found our Nova girl – she completed our family for sure!”
If you, or someone you know, is looking to escape an abusive situation, and need a place for pets, please check Safe Place For Pets. Unfortunately, too many people stay with their abusers because they can’t bring their pets with them. The statistics are sobering:
Nearly 50% of domestic violence victims have delayed leaving their abuser out of fear of harm to their animals.
52% of victims in shelters leave their pets with their batterers.
71% of pet-owning women entering domestic violence shelters reported that their batterer had injured, maimed, killed or threatened family pets.

I’m so glad that Nova has a happier story now! Our dog is also named Willow and she is a rescue. She is one of the happiest pit bulls and the most spoiled. She is definitely our baby (no kids yet).

Those eyes! I could look at these photos all day. I’m so glad Nova has a happy life now! I just don’t understand how anyone could harm a pet. So sad for dogs that are in a bad home environment and suffering abuse.

Willow and Nova are so beautiful! These photos came out stunning, there’s nothing like a Husky in the snow, right? My girl Icy is a Husky who also refuses to come inside when it snows, she is completely in her element when it’s cold & snowy. I’m so glad you shared the stats on abusive relationships and how it impacts pets. Thank goodness Nova and her mom escaped the abuse. I’m a supporter of the Pet And Women’s Safety Act (PAWS), which helps increase the number of shelters that will accept pets. It’s a vital community need.
