June is Adopt A Cat Month, and while June may almost be over, there are still a lot of cats in shelters looking for a place to call home.

If you are thinking about adding a cat to your family, I hope you will help put kitten mills out of business by choosing to adopt a cat.
Before you bring your new cat home, it is a good idea to make sure you have the essentials.
Cat Supplies
Food (start with the food your cat is used to eating, if you have a preferred food, transition your cat’s diet slowly. NomNom is a great choice!)
Litter Box and Litter
Hiding spots (if there aren’t any, you can make one out of a cardboard box)
Toys
Adjustment Period
Moving is stressful even under the best circumstances. It must be very confusing for a newly adopted animal to be placed in a new environment.
A lot of people recommend confining a new cat to one room for a period of time, so the cat isn’t overwhelmed with everything, particularly if there are other pets. If you have dogs, you may want to read this post, Introducing A Cat Into Your Home. It is important for you to spend some time in the room with your new cat, even if the cat is shy. If your cat is hiding, simply spend some time in the room reading or watching TV so your cat can observe and learn to trust you. When it comes to helping cats adapt, patience is a virtue!
We found some cool essentials to help you and your cat chill in style!
Adoptable Cats
Albert and Conrad are litter mates that were born in April 2016. Both are neutered, vaccinated, and ready for a forever home.
Angelique loves people! However, she can be territorial with other cats. Derek is shy around people, but enjoys the company of other cats.
Chuck is a handsome gray and white short-haired cat who is FIV positive. Symphony is a gorgeous long-haired cat who is also FIV positive.
Handsome Larby is a really great listener. Masquerade looks like a woman of mystery and one of the prettiest cats I’ve seen.
Skittles is a Siamese cat, and Mona is a Himalayan cat who was once part of a feral cat colony. She is friendly once she feels comfortable with people but does not like to be picked up. Mona has a deformed paw.
You can also check your local shelter and Petfinder to find awesome cats in your area.
I’d love to hear if an adopted pet has touched your life in a positive way.

So many cuties needing homes. We’ve been busy here with kitten season and I posted a few pics of 2 cuties on Monday. Have a safe July 4th!

What gorgeous kitty cats! I wish I could take them all home. It’s especially important to adopt a cat this month because it’s “kitten season”, when shelters are overrun with new kittens. Adopting an older cat will help tremendously! Thanks for this post (- :

I photograph the cats at my local shelter for their adoption profiles. It breaks my heart to see the same faces there every week. I always want to bring another one home each week (in addition to the previous cats). Great post.

I love them all, but Masquerade is exceptional!

I’m tempted to foster a kitten (the shelters are overflowing) but it would drive the males in the house crazy!

If you can get your boyfriend to agree, I bet Mr. N will go along with it.

So many sweet faces… I hope they all find loving homes! I love your style picks too. 🙂

There are so many cats that are looking for their forever homes and I have one that I’m sharing on my blog that is 14 yrs old but she would make a wonderful addition to any family. When we brought our 2 cats home we kept them in our bedroom until they adjusted and felt comfortable in their new environment.
I love the rattan chair! I bet my cats would too!
The Daily Pip says
We met Skittles, too!!!! She will be in my post tomorrow. What a small world.
Keeping a cat in a small room to start with is very important. Cats are particularly sensitive to change as well as territory. By giving them a small room to adjust in, it gives them a space they can feel is their own and return to in times of stress. Gradually, letting them out into the rest of the home – this is especially true if there are other cats or animals in the home.
Great post!

What a wonderful list of must haves when adopting a cat. My Aunt recently adopted a cat from the shelter and at first didn’t relieze all the things needed to bring home a cat.

I haven’t ever met a cat that wasn’t adopted before, but I guess kitten mills are big business. It makes me so sad.
