Since Mondays can be rough on a lot of people, I always try to start the week with a session that makes me smile. This great session with rescued Border Collie, Neela, at the beach in Cape Cod, just gets better when you read the story from her best friend. Thanks to Lydia Leclair Photography for these happy photos.
From Dana: Neela is a 7 year old female Border Collie. I was so fortunate to stumble upon her picture while searching to adopt. The wonderful organization where I found her at is Glen Highland Farm. You can vacation at dog camp and help dogs at the same time! All breeds are welcome, the setting is off-leash in the country!
I fell in love with Neela’s picture when I first saw oh her almost 7 years ago.
I completed the adoption application; all 8 pages. I was so worried because the first question listed asked if you have a fenced in yard. At the time I was living with my parent’s who own a lot of land, far off the road and the property is too large to fence. I thought there’s no chance they would accept my application, but my mom urged me to try always stating ‘if its meant to be it will be.’ Once Neela was medically ready we were invited out to visit the farm and meet each other. We were encouraged to bring my patent’s dog to ensure they would get along.
My mom and I along with the family dog, Jack, had driven over 6 hours from Massachusetts to Morris, NY. It was a rainy day and we opened the gate to the field and around the corner ran a thin black bullet, passing my mom, paid no attention to Jack and flew to me in total excitement. Lillie stated ‘ think she’s finally found her fur mom.’ That night we stayed in a local bed and breakfast (dog friendly of course) to really see if we were compatible . Long story short…we were. I was Neela’s 6th home, she was expected to be around 11 months old at the time of the adoption. People always ask why she had so many homes, I’ll never know.
I was told that she’ll probably never be an ‘off leash dog’, she was skittish, fearful of men and very shy. She certainly blossomed into her own personality.
She runs free at the beach, we’ve traveled the county together horse showing, and now she comes to work with me working as a certified therapy dog in a skilled nursing facility.
We volunteer at local hospitals on different units in so many different capacities.
I thank my lucky stars every day for finding her and being so lucky to have a once in a life time dog and that’s her!!
I love a happy ending and I’m so glad that enough people cared about Neela that she was given the opportunity to find her perfect forever home! Given the right person, Neela really became the perfect dog.
