Dog Pawty: Sophie’s Cake Smash

Darryl Ann (from Joe R Geske Photography) documented her dog Sophie’s first year by the numbers.  I love this idea!

Then she kicked things up and threw Sophie a small party complete with decorations, hats,  a birthday cake, and Sophie’s best doggie friend, Delilah.

From Darryl Ann:  “For Sophie’s birthday, I knew I wanted to do something special.  She is my first dog, and I tend to spoil her a lot!   I adopted her at 4 months old (June 2013), and I can’t imagine my life without her.  Sophie (a collie /terrier mix, we think) was adopted from the Sedwick County Humane Society in Wichita, Kansas.   As a photographer, I see a lot of children photographers having one-year-old cake smash sessions in their studios, and I thought, ‘I have a studio, and I have my fur-child turning one!’   So I decided to plan a simple, DIY cake smash session to celebrate Sophie’s first birthday.  

I bought fabric from Jo-Ann fabrics to make a colorful flag banner.   I also picked up a glass plate, a candlestick holder, and white paint to make my treat and cake holder from (just paint and glue together with superglue!).  Of course, no party could be complete without birthday hats as well. Then I whipped up Sophie’s favorite Peanut Butter Pumpkin doggie treats, as well as a dog-friendly carrot cake with peanut butter and honey frosting.

In attendance was Sophie’s best doggie-friend Delilah (who did not appreciate birthday hats at all.)  

Sophie was a little tentative at first to try her cake, but after she tasted the frosting, it was all systems go for digging in!   Delilah also had a chance to try a little bit of cake.   Don’t worry, Sophie and Delilah only ate enough to get a few photos – the leftover was portioned throughout the week as doggie treats.”
